Is HVAC System Ready For Replacement?

Posted on

Unless you are experienced with HVAC systems, determining when it is time for a new one can be challenging. What you might not realize is that your system will give clues that it might be time to talk to your HVAC professional about replacing the unit. Here are some clues to look for if you suspect your unit is on its last legs.

Unexplained Moisture

As it operates, some condensation will appear at various parts of the HVAC system. However, when moisture is found in places it should not be, a replacement might be necessary.

Water pooled in the area near the unit is not normal. There is a possibility that the drain tube is clogged, but it could also indicate a more serious issue. Your HVAC professional can assess the issue and determine whether or not a new unit is warranted.

Frequent Repairs

If your HVAC professional has been to your home numerous times over the past year to repair your system, it might be time for a new one. Although continuing to repair the unit is a possibility, the repair costs add up.

In addition to spending money on repairs that could be going towards a new unit, you could also be spending more on energy bills. When your HVAC unit is not operating efficiently, it can put more of a strain on your energy as it attempts to keep your home cooled to the desired temperature. As a result, your energy bills could continue to rise until you replace the unit.

Age of HVAC System

Even if you are not having too many problems with your HVAC system, looking for a replacement can be sensible if the unit is old. Older units tend to operate less efficiently. The less efficient the unit is, the more energy is being used, which means higher utility bills for you.

Newer units are more energy efficient and can help you save money on cooling costs. If you are unsure whether or not a new unit could help you save, check the energy ratings of newer models. Your HVAC professional can help you determine the appropriate size and model for your home and budget.

Talk to your HVAC professional about other signs that could indicate it is time for a new HVAC system for your home. He or she can also provide an evaluation of your current system to determine if there are any problems that need repairing now.
